What a Custom Wall Mural Actually Is
A custom wall mural is artwork made for one specific wall. Not a poster, not a repeating wallpaper roll cut to fit — a single image sized to the exact width and height of your surface, with the composition arranged around the doors, switches and furniture that are already in the room.
DecoPrint Studio produces those murals by printing them directly onto the wall. A vertical UV printer is wheeled into the room, positioned against the surface and passes over it while ultraviolet light cures the ink on contact. The image bonds to the wall itself. That is why printed wall murals have no seams, no bubbles and no lifting edges: there is nothing between the artwork and the plaster.
Printed Murals vs Painted Murals vs Wallpaper
Three ways exist to put a large image on a wall, and each is good at something different.
Hand-painted murals are craft objects. An artist works on site for days or weeks, and the result carries visible brushwork that many people love. What painting struggles with is photographic detail, precise brand colour and fine type — and the schedule, which is measured in weeks rather than hours. Our wall mural cost guide compares the two on real project pricing.
Wallpaper and vinyl put the image on a separate material that is then glued to the wall. That means panel seams, the risk of bubbling on textured surfaces, and edges that can lift in humid rooms. It also means a removal job later. We covered the trade-offs in wallpaper vs. wall printing.
Direct-to-wall printing removes the intermediate material entirely. The ink is cured onto the existing surface, it is dry the moment it is laid down, and when you want the room back to plain paint you prime and repaint. If you want the mechanics in detail, read how direct-to-wall printing works.
What Can Be Printed
- Photographs. Landscapes, cityscapes, family portraits, product shots and archive images, enlarged to wall scale. See photo wall murals for file guidance.
- Illustration and artwork. Anything from botanical drawing to anime, pop art and hyperrealism — including work you commission from your own artist.
- Brand assets. Logos from vector files, brand patterns, wayfinding graphics and typography, colour-matched to your brand guidelines.
- Patterns and textures. Geometric repeats, terrazzo, marble, concrete and gradient washes, scaled to the wall so the repeat lands where you want it.
Surfaces We Print
Drywall and plaster are the most common. We also print onto primed concrete and block, wood panelling, MDF, glass partitions, metal and aluminium panels, canvas and foam board. Smooth surfaces hold the finest detail; light texture still prints well and simply softens very fine lines. Heavily damaged or actively damp walls need repair before printing, and we say so at the quoting stage rather than after. Rigid panels are covered on our glass, wood, metal and canvas page.
Design, Preview, Print, Done
1. Design and measurement. Send artwork, a reference image or just a description. We measure the wall (or work from your photo and dimensions), set the crop and resolve how the image sits around outlets, doors and furniture.
2. Free wall preview. We place the design onto a photo of your actual wall, to scale, so you approve the real thing rather than a mood board. The preview is free and carries no obligation — start it on the free wall preview page.
3. Printing on site. The printer arrives, the surface is prepped and masked, and printing begins. The process is low-odor, produces no dust and needs no drying time because UV light cures each pass immediately.
4. Handover. Edges are checked, the space is cleaned and the room is usable straight away. For sun-exposed walls we can add a protective topcoat.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a custom wall mural?
A custom wall mural is artwork produced specifically for one wall — your photograph, illustration, brand graphic or pattern, scaled to the exact dimensions of the surface. We print it directly onto the wall with UV-cured ink, so there is no wallpaper, no vinyl panel and no adhesive between the image and the plaster.
Is printed better than a hand-painted mural?
It depends on what you want. A hand-painted mural is a piece of craft with visible brushwork. A printed mural reproduces photographic detail, exact brand colours and fine typography that painting cannot match, and it is finished in a single visit rather than over weeks. Many clients choose printing for logos, photographs and detailed illustration, and painting for loose, expressive artwork.
Can you print on a textured or previously painted wall?
Yes. Smooth drywall gives the sharpest result, but light orange peel, knockdown texture, primed concrete and previously painted walls all print. We check the surface before quoting and tell you if any patching or priming is needed first.
How long does a custom wall mural take?
Design and proofing usually take two to five business days. Most single walls are printed and finished in one on-site visit. Larger multi-wall projects are scheduled in phases, often in the evening or at the weekend for occupied spaces.
Can a printed mural be removed later?
Yes. The ink sits on the wall surface, so the wall can be primed and repainted like any other painted finish — there is nothing to peel off and no adhesive residue to strip.
